Discovering the imperial cities of Morocco

Morocco is a fascinating country, rich in history and ancient traditions. The imperial towns are a must for anyone wishing to plunge into the deep roots of the Moroccan empire. Marrakech, Rabat, Fez and Meknes are key stops for exploring the country’s cultural and artistic heritage.

Marrakech: the red city

Marrakech, known as the “red city” for the color of its buildings, is an icon of Morocco. Founded in the 12th century, it is famous for its monuments, bustling medina and souks. The Koutoubia Mosque, with its imposing minaret, dominates the skyline of the city, while the Saadian Tombs offer a glimpse into the art of Islam. Marrakech’s medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of winding streets and markets full of spices and handicrafts.

Rabat: the capital of Morocco

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Rabat is the capital of Morocco, a city where the modern meets the historic. Its most famous monuments include the Hassan Tower, an unfinished 12th-century minaret, and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, a majestic structure housing the remains of the ruler and his sons.

Fez: the spiritual capital

We continue our journey to Fez, the spiritual capital of Morocco and one of the oldest cities in the Islamic world. Its medina is a maze of alleys and souks and is considered one of the largest pedestrian areas in the world. Fez is home to the famous al-Qarawiyyin University, the oldest educational institution still in operation, and numerous Koranic schools. The city is famous for its tanneries, where leather is processed using traditional techniques in colorful vats that create a unique spectacle.

Meknes: the city of Sultan Moulay Ismail

meknes, morocco

Meknes is the last of the imperial cities. It is less known than the others, but no less fascinating. Surrounded by imposing walls, it was the capital of the kingdom under Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. The Bab El Mansour, one of the most majestic gates in Morocco, symbolizes the city’s power.
