What to do in Favignana: a guide to the activities on the island

Favignana, the largest of the Egadi islands, called Aegusa by the ancients, is a place of incredible charm.  The butterfly-shaped island awaits you, with its enchanting coves and beaches, its crystal clear sea and its slow, old-fashioned rhythms. Easily reached by ferry from the ports of Trapani and Marsala, Favignana is the ideal place for a vacation of tranquility and wonder.

Boat trip or bike ride

A must do activity in Favignana is boating. Favignana is considered by many to be the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean. It deserves to be seen from the sea, so you can enjoy the spectacular views and scenery. You can book different boats to do this tour, from motorboat to yacht. The choice is yours, but for sure the effect will be incredible. Be careful though, the sea in Favignana is protected by the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area, always consult the dedicated website before leaving. Favignana also lends itself well to biking. With a perimeter of about 33 km, Favignana is a favorite destination for cyclists from all over the world: flat and full of paved roads, the island is a real enchantment for a tour on two wheels.

Snorkeling and diving

The Egadi Islands in general can be considered a diving paradise: there are in fact 50 dive sites including caves, walls, archaeological sites and wrecks. The most famous spot is definitely Galeotta, where you can admire shoals of bream and moray eels; there are also Secca del Toro, Secca fondale, Fata Morgana; more suitable for beginners, however, is Cala Rotonda. What all the dive sites in the area have in common, however, is the naturalistic heritage present in its waters, with very rare species of great biological value.

Visit to the Tonnara of Favignana and the Castle of Santa Caterina

The hypogean gardens are characteristic of the island. They are the result of man’s quarrying of calcarenite: in the abandoned quarries, over the years, small spontaneous groves of fruit trees have sprung up, which were later transformed into gardens. The most famous is the garden of Villa Margherita, also known as the Garden of the Impossible. It was created by Maria Gabriella Campo. Another place not to be missed in Favignana is the Tonnara, also known as the former Stabilimento Florio, which is one of the largest tuna fishing grounds in the Mediterranean. Another historical and cultural beauty of the area is the Castle of Santa Caterina, an ancient manor located on Mount Santa Caterina at 310 meters above sea level. The castle was built by the Normans on a watchtower built by the Saracens in the 9th century.
