Iconic, glamorous, timeless, Capri is one of Italy’s most fascinating and appreciated tourist destinations. A Mediterranean jewel that offers the perfect combination of natural, historical and cultural beauty. Here are the most iconic places on Capri not to be missed.
A trip to Capri must begin at Marina Grande, the island’s main port. From here, you can book a boat trip to discover the Grotta Azzurra, famous for its incredible deep blue waters. The Capri boat trip is a must, as it allows you to admire all the natural beauty of the island, including the famous Faraglioni, three imposing rocks that rise majestically from the sea, the undisputed symbol of Capri.
To enjoy a panoramic view of the island, you have to climb up to Monte Solaro, the highest point on Capri. You can reach it by chairlift from Pizza Vittoria in Anacapri or along an evocative footpath, which also starts from Anacapri, but this time from Piazza della Pace. From the top, you can admire the entire Gulf of Naples, the islands of the Galli and on clear days, even the Gulf of Salerno.
No visit to Capri is complete without a stop in the famous Piazzetta, the beating heart of the island: it is the place where islanders and tourists meet for a coffee or an aperitif, enjoying the island’s glamorous atmosphere. A few steps away, you will find the Gardens of Augustus, ideal for a quiet break amidst fragrant flowers and exotic plants, with a breathtaking view of the Faraglioni and the famous Via Krupp, a road with sinuous curves that descends to the sea.
Nearby Anacapri is a quieter resort that has managed to retain an authentic atmosphere. The splendid Villa San Michele, built by Swedish doctor and writer Axel Munthe, is worth a visit here. The villa is a veritable open-air museum, with a collection of archaeological finds and works of art, as well as enchanting gardens and a spectacular view of the Gulf of Naples.
However, Capri is also famous for its beautiful beaches, such as the Palazzo di Mare beach (Bagni di Tiberio), a historical site, said to have been the private beach of the Roman emperor Tiberius. Marina Piccola offers crystal-clear waters and extraordinary views of the Faraglioni, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun. Spiaggia di Torre Saracena is ideal for those seeking a more exclusive location, with well-equipped bathing establishments. Finally, Spiaggia di Gradola, near the Grotta Azzurra, is an uncrowded corner of paradise, perfect for those who enjoy scuba diving.
